Asshole Coming Through

Friday, July 3, 2009

Well, Lombardi finally made a splash tonight after a very quiet Free Agency opening day with many GMs out of their minds signing players to ridiculous contracts. The wait was killer as a Kings fan and finally Darren Dreger (resident favorite of A Queen Among Kings) broke the story via Twitter just a few minutes ago that the Kings had traded for Aves' Ryan Smyth.

Reaction #1: Omg, we got an asshole in the lineup.

Reaction #2: Who in Zeus' jizz did the Kings give up to get Smyth?

Reaction #3: (After reading the trade results) Hahaha!

In the end the Kings gave up a 5th round pick in 2010, D Kyle Quincey, and D Tom Preissing. First off, the 5th round pick is chump change. Secondly, I cannot believe someone took Preissing from us!!

Lombardi, you are awesome.

But, sadly Quincey will be leaving the sunny coast of Los Angeles for the snowbanks of Denver. This is the only part I'm a bit sad about, but we didn't really need him after the signing of Rob Scuderi (Go Deano!) to a 4-year, $13.6 million contract yesterday. Smyth has 3 years remaining on his 5-year contract in Colorado with the cap hit at $6.25 mil. He will make $6.5 mil this season, $5.5 next, and $4.5 in 2011-2012. Quincey was definitely the big piece in this trade and I'm glad that was all the Kings had to give up.

The pieces are falling into place... and jesus christ, Ryan Smyth is a King...

I think this is great for the Kings. Go to the net-good hands-character guy a team can never have enough of.

Veteran with deep playoff and international experieZEUS' JIZZ?!?

Alright! A nice move by Lombardi... Actually, some big props to him as well, for not overspending ridiculously like certain other teams have. The only reasonable deals on July 1 were the Sedin signings. Their production has been better than Rick Nash (314 for Henrik to 257 for Rick over last four seasons) yet Nash is taking home over $8 mill now to the Sedins 6...

Uh, back to the Kings... As a Kings fan living just outside Vancouver, BC, I am looking forward to seeing a couple games at the Staples Center in October, will be my 2nd and 3rd games there!

Having Quincey leave Los Angeles nearly brings a tear to my eye. Good riddance to Preissing though. I have mixed feelings about Smyth, but I will honestly say I was impressed when JMFJ almost killed him.

Another thought, this opens up a spot for one of the young D-men. That excites me greatly.

Doughty, Scuderi, Johnson, Greene, O'D., and Harrold (eh). Hickey or Drewiske perchance?

Greener - It's a surprising trade, but I'll learn to get used to it...

Cobsbread - Thanks for commenting! I'm glad Lombardi didn't go crazy on July 1st either. I wouldn't have paid the Sedins $6.6, but that's just me. Hope you have a rocking time at Staples Center!!

Brad - You're right about the D. There are plenty of options back there. I'm pretty excited for the season to start already!

Connie:
Thanks for the welcome.

6.1 mill for the Sedins, but close enough. The reality is that they have outproduced most every player in the NHL point wise over the last three years. The only players to pass them are: Ovie, Malkin, Crosby, Lecavalier, Iginla, Savard, Thornton, Spezza, Alfredsson, St. Louis, and Heatley. Pretty elite company? They just don't get respect because they don't have the foot speed or flash of other guys. And Vancouver got them, for 5 year deals, for less than such luminaries as Ed Jovanovski and Wade Redden are making... oh and Scott Gomez and Chris Drury. :)

Go Kings!!
